Summer Reading List

The summer reading list is ready and accessible online. Reading is a win/win proposition. Reading shapes our world view, produces higher scores on standardized tests, makes us more interesting people and enables us to better share and explore ideas. This year in an effort to enhance our students' vocabulary and reading skills, we are incorporating some non-fiction selections. Studies have shown that reading non-fiction helps build vocabulary and boost comprehension. Students will select a novel from the grade they are entering in September.

Students enjoy live anti-bullying production from George Street Playhouse

Today, June 10, 2010, our seventh and eighth grade classes watched a live play titled "In Between" presented by the local New Brunswick theater group George Street Playhouse. The plot involved dealing with being the new student at school and finding yourself "in between" a nice, but somewhat strange, student and the cool, popular student who turns out to be bullying him. The play helped us all learn about more about how to deal with bullying and tips for handling conflict.

Princeton University Trip

Today, May 13th, 2010, CJCP students from 10th and 11th grades went to Princeton University for an introduction to the university and a campus tour. The students were first given a presentation on Princeton University History and the many opportunities the campus offers to students. Students were briefed on selecting a degree programs, residential living options, the application process and financial aid opportunities. With over 25,000 applicants this year, Princeton University selects students to attend based upon academics, personal talents, extracurricular activities, community service, athletics, work experience and other areas of interest. The university does not meet quotas and does not use standard formulas for accepting students to their campus. Princeton University is looking to provide students with the highest level of education and opportunity. It has been highly recommended by university staff for students to "get involved" and to develop their academic and personal abilities while in high school to be prepared for the academic life at an Ivy League College.

Castle Shakespeare Repertory Theatre Trip

On Wednesday, May 5th, Ms. Warren's Junior class took a field trip to the Castle Shakespeare Repertory Theatre to see their performance of Romeo and Juliet in Budd Lake, New Jersey. The Junior class is currently reading Shakespeare's Othello and focusing on Literary Criticism. The class utilized the performance of Romeo and Juliet to become yet more familiar with Shakespeare's language and central themes of his performance-based text. Since Shakespeare's work was never meant to be read, only meant to be heard and seen as performance art, the students were exposed to a unique adaptation of the text as it was meant to be received. Focusing on historical criticism, the students had a unique lens of observing the plot from an angle not learned before. Very pleasingly, the students did see the difference in ways a play could be read and criticized. They are even more ready to perform a literary critique of Othello.
